The quote of this year is “There are squid everywhere!” . I haven’t seen so many squid before. This Saturday Bert and I had a single purpose. Go do a night dive and see squid. On a perfect day with beautiful full moon we descended at the very shallow part of the back beach and boom! There they were, two squid!
Then through out the dive we saw so many more, most of them quite young, 3-5 inch ones, single or in groups of 2-3. And there was one, which I will call colossal squid because it was maybe more than a foot long, biggest one I ever saw. Some skittish, some came and dance with us.
In addition to all the squid we saw many lobsters declared war to anything moving, two rock gunnels (one was so sick probably won’t live long), one juvenile sculpin and a sleeping cod.
Weather was warm, water was warm, viz was decent, creatures were everywhere. Overall beautiful night dive at Back Beach.
